Marina Bay Sands Photoshoot Guide: Best Spots Day & Night

Marina Bay Sands is the building on every Singapore postcard, and the waterfront around it is where most travellers want their Singapore skyline photos. The good news: the best views are free, easy to reach and at their best right when you’d want to be out anyway, at sunset and after dark.

This guide covers the best places to take photos at Marina Bay Sands, the right time for day and night photos, and how to avoid the crowds that gather every evening.

Marina Bay Sands photoshoot: quick guide

  • Nearest MRT: Bayfront (Circle and Downtown lines)
  • Best time: from about 4:30pm through sunset and blue hour, and into the night
  • Cost: the promenade, Event Plaza and waterfront are free; the SkyPark Observation Deck needs a ticket
  • Time needed: 1 to 2 hours; it’s easy to combine with Gardens by the Bay or the Merlion
  • Best for: couples, solo travellers, night portraits, city and fashion-style photos
  • What to wear: black, white, red, anything with a little shine; clean modern styling

Why Marina Bay Sands is great for photos

Marina Bay is where Singapore looks most like a modern city: glass towers across the water, the three hotel towers with the SkyPark on top, the ArtScience Museum shaped like a lotus, and the glass sphere of the Apple store floating in the bay. After dark it all lights up and reflects in the water, and a simple portrait instantly looks like a night out in Singapore.

Best photo spots at Marina Bay Sands

1. The waterfront promenade (skyline view)

Walk along the promenade in front of The Shoppes and you face the Central Business District across the bay. At night the towers glow and their colours ripple across the water. Lean on the railing, look back at the camera, and the skyline does the rest.

2. Near the Apple sphere

The floating glass dome of Apple Marina Bay Sands makes a striking, very recognisable background, day or night. In the daytime the promenade here is lined with palms and the glass reflects the sky.

3. City lights as bokeh

With a wide aperture, the lights across the bay turn into soft circles of colour. This is my favourite way to make a night portrait feel dreamy rather than busy: the person sharp, the city a glowing blur behind.

4. The crystal pavilion

The glass pavilion floating on the water next to the promenade (home to the Louis Vuitton Island Maison) is lit warmly after dark. It gives a glamorous, fashion-style backdrop, perfect with a black dress.

5. Event Plaza and the ArtScience Museum side

The Event Plaza steps lead down to the water and face the skyline, and the white petals of the ArtScience Museum are just along the path. Walk a little further and you reach the Helix Bridge, whose curving steel structure lights up at night.

6. Across the bay: Marina Bay Sands in the background

If you want the hotel itself in the photo, you need to be across the water. The Merlion Park side and the Esplanade waterfront both give the classic view of Marina Bay Sands behind you. The Helix Bridge links the two sides, so it’s easy to shoot both in one session.

Best time for a Marina Bay Sands photoshoot

Start around 4:30pm. The first half hour gives soft daytime photos along the promenade. Then comes sunset, and after it blue hour, roughly 20 minutes when the sky is deep blue and the city lights come on. That’s the most beautiful time for skyline photos, because you get detail in the sky and the lights.

The Spectra show. Marina Bay Sands runs a free light and water show called Spectra at Event Plaza, 8pm and 9pm nightly, with an extra 10pm show on Fridays and Saturdays. It lasts about 15 minutes. The plaza fills up quickly before each show, so I like to shoot the portraits before 7:45pm and then watch the show.

Morning. For an empty promenade, come early in the morning. It’s quieter and cooler, though you lose the night lights.

What to wear

  • Black is the classic night-time choice and looks elegant against the lights
  • White or cream stands out well in both daytime and night photos
  • Red or a bold colour pops against the blue of the evening sky
  • A little shine (satin, sequins, metallic jewellery) catches the city lights
  • For couples, coordinate colours rather than matching exactly

Tips for better photos

  • The bigger the architecture, the simpler the pose. Stand, walk, lean on the railing, look out at the water. Let the space do the talking.
  • Get low. Shooting from a low angle makes the towers look even taller.
  • Watch the wind. It’s often breezy by the water, which is great for hair and dresses but not for hats.
  • Mind the crowds. Evenings are busy. We keep moving and use the railing and the water to frame out passers-by.

For photographers: 24mm or 35mm for environmental portraits with the skyline, an 85mm at a wide aperture for bokeh portraits, and a zoom for compressing the skyline behind the person from further away.

A simple photo route

Bayfront MRT → Marina Bay Sands promenade → Apple sphere and crystal pavilion → Event Plaza → ArtScience Museum → Helix Bridge → Merlion Park side for the classic hotel view

Arriving earlier? Start at Gardens by the Bay, just behind the hotel, then walk to the waterfront for sunset.
