Gardens by the Bay Photoshoot Guide: Best Spots & Times

If you only have time for one photoshoot in Singapore, Gardens by the Bay is hard to beat. The Supertrees, the lakes, the tropical planting and Marina Bay Sands rising behind them all say “Singapore” in a single frame. You don’t have to explain where you were. Everyone knows.

I shoot here often with travellers. This guide covers the best photo spots at Gardens by the Bay, when to go, what to wear, and the small things that make the photos look relaxed instead of crowded.

Gardens by the Bay photoshoot: quick guide

  • Nearest MRT: Bayfront (Circle and Downtown lines), then follow the signs to the gardens
  • Best time: from about 4:30pm through sunset and blue hour; early morning is quieter
  • Cost: the outdoor gardens, Supertree Grove and the lakes are free; the Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, OCBC Skyway and Supertree Observatory need tickets
  • Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours for a relaxed shoot
  • Best for: couples, solo travellers, families, pre-wedding and night photos
  • What to wear: white, cream, beige or black; one bright colour for a playful look

Why Gardens by the Bay is great for photos

Most places give you one good background. Gardens by the Bay gives you three within a few minutes’ walk: futuristic (the Supertrees), tropical (lakes, ferns, lily pads and flowers) and skyline (Marina Bay Sands, just across the road). You can change the whole mood of the photos without taking a taxi.

It also works in almost any weather. Bright sun makes the colours pop, and a cloudy afternoon gives soft, even light on faces, which is exactly what you want for portraits.

Best photo spots at Gardens by the Bay

1. Supertree Grove

The obvious one, and for good reason. Stand close and shoot upwards, and the Supertrees tower over you like a sci-fi forest. Step back and you can fit several of them, plus Marina Bay Sands, into one frame.

My tip: keep the person small in some photos. The Supertrees are already so strong visually that a wider photo, where you’re a small figure in a big space, often feels more “Singapore” than a tight portrait.

Look for the railings lined with bougainvillea around the grove. A flash of pink in the foreground with the Supertrees and Marina Bay Sands behind is one of my favourite frames here.

2. The lakes and fountains

The Dragonfly and Kingfisher lakes sit on the edge of the gardens, with fountains, boardwalks and the Supertrees reflected in the water. The fountains make a lovely soft background when blurred, and there is usually more space and fewer people than in the grove itself.

3. The boardwalks

The wooden boardwalks over the water are made for movement. Walk towards the camera, stop, turn, play with your skirt. A long skirt or dress that moves in the breeze photographs beautifully here.

4. The lily pond with Marina Bay Sands

Tucked among the greenery there are quiet ponds full of lily pads, with the Supertrees and the Marina Bay Sands skyline in the distance. It feels calm and a little secret, a nice contrast to the busy grove.

5. OCBC Skyway and the conservatories (ticketed)

The OCBC Skyway is a walkway strung between the Supertrees, with views over the whole garden. The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest are huge glass conservatories, cool inside and full of flowers and a tall indoor waterfall. They’re great if it rains, but they need tickets and can be busy, so I usually treat them as a bonus rather than the main plan.

Best time for a Gardens by the Bay photoshoot

Late afternoon to night (my first choice). Start at around 4:30pm. You get warm side light on the gardens first, then sunset behind the skyline, then blue hour, when the sky turns deep blue and the Supertrees light up. In two hours you can get day, golden hour and night photos in one session.

Garden Rhapsody. The free light and sound show runs at Supertree Grove every night at 7:45pm and 8:45pm. The grove gets crowded just before each show, so I like to finish the portraits before 7:30pm and then shoot a few night photos with the lights on.

Early morning. If you prefer an empty garden, come around 8am. The light is soft and it’s much cooler, though you won’t get the night lights.

Midday. It’s hot, and the sun is directly overhead. If midday is your only option, we stay near the trees and use the shade.

What to wear

  • White, cream and beige look fresh against all that green and don’t fight with the Supertrees
  • Black works well for evening and night photos
  • One bright colour (yellow, red, cobalt blue) gives a playful travel look
  • Long skirts and flowing dresses move beautifully on the boardwalks
  • Comfortable shoes: the gardens are big and you’ll walk more than you think. Bring heels in a bag if you want them for a few photos

Tips for better photos

  • Keep poses simple. The background does a lot of work here. Walking, looking up at the Supertrees or holding hands with your partner is usually enough.
  • Use the space. Mix wide photos where you’re small in the frame with close portraits.
  • Bring water and a small towel. Singapore is humid, especially in the late afternoon.
  • Check the weather. Tropical showers usually pass quickly. The conservatories and covered areas are good backup spots.

For photographers: a 24mm or 35mm lens covers the Supertrees and environmental portraits, an 85mm gives soft backgrounds by the lakes, and a 24–200mm zoom is handy for moving quickly between wide and tight shots.

A simple photo route

Bayfront MRT → Supertree Grove → the lakes and boardwalks → lily ponds → sunset and blue hour back at the grove → Garden Rhapsody

It connects easily with Marina Bay too. From the gardens you can walk to the Marina Bay Sands promenade for skyline and night photos.
